Surfing in Fiji
There are some awesome waves in Fiji. Most are
powerful, open ocean reef passage waves breaking over coral and
should only be considered by experienced surfers. Reef booties are
a must and a helmet can be a good idea as well. For board sizes,
take something with a bit more length than your usual shortboard
that will handle Indo style power and help you get more waves.
There are only a few spots you can paddle out to
on Viti Levu such as Sigatoka Rivermouth, Hideaway passage and Natadola
beach. Other spots do exist but to access good waves, it is usually
easier to use the services of a dedicated surf resort or guide and
benefit from their local knowledge. They can take you out on their
boat and have already negotiated access with the local villages
in that area.
Best time to go is usually the Dry season (May
- October) as the swell is usually bigger & the weather is not
so hot, but you can also score calmer conditions during summer -
just don't forget that sunblock!
Always remember "Conserve Fiji today to preserve Fiji for tomorrow."
